Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment London

PRP treatment London harnesses the healing potential of plasma concentrates, which serve as a method to support the body in completing the healing process and fortifying weakened tissues. By utilizing PRP derived from the patient’s own blood with a higher platelet concentration than normal, this innovative approach fosters healing in damaged tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. This makes it a viable option for addressing diverse musculoskeletal issues, offering patients in London an effective solution for their conditions.

What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment in London involves extracting a small amount of your blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting the PRP into the targeted area. Platelets contain growth factors that stimulate tissue repair, collagen production, and overall rejuvenation.

Your blood consists mostly of plasma, which is the liquid part containing red and white blood cells, along with platelets responsible for clotting. Platelets contain growth factors that aid in healing and regeneration. Platelet-rich plasma therapy involves injecting a concentrated amount of platelets, typically 5 to 10 times higher than normal, to speed up healing in injuries to tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. This therapy utilizes the body’s own healing system to address musculoskeletal issues, leading to reduced healing time and pain relief. It can be used alone or alongside other therapies like Stromal Vascular Fraction or Mesenchymal Cell Therapy, often enhancing recovery even after surgery due to its healing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

PRP injections offer several key benefits, including reducing the necessity for anti-inflammatories or stronger medications like opioids. PRP serves as a concentrated source of growth factors and cellular signaling factors that have the potential to accelerate and enhance healing in various tissues. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure performed on the same day with minimal recovery time. It does not require general anesthesia, and most patients do not require post-operative pain medication. Patients are fully awake and able to return home within a few hours after receiving injections in the affected area. Since PRP involves using a person’s own platelets, adverse reactions to the injections are rare. However, some individuals may experience irritation, temporary increased pain levels, bleeding, or infection at the injection site. If you develop any concerning symptoms, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The procedure is conducted in an outpatient setting and typically lasts up to an hour. The main steps of the procedure are as follows:

  1. A blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm. The quantity of the sample depends on the location where the PRP will be injected.
  2. The blood sample is then placed in a centrifuge machine, where it is spun to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood. This separation process usually takes about 15 minutes.
  3. The concentrated platelets, now activated, are injected locally into the treatment area. This releases growth factors that stimulate and enhance the production of reparative cells in your body, initiating the healing process. In some cases, ultrasound imaging is utilized to guide the injection.

The number of injections necessary varies depending on the injury or condition, but typically ranges from one to six injections, administered at regular intervals.

Before undergoing PRP treatment procedures, it’s important to follow these necessary preparations:

  1. Consultation: Schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider or clinic offering PRP therapy for an initial consultation. During this consultation, your medical history, current health status, and the specific condition being treated will be assessed to determine if you are a suitable candidate for PRP therapy.

  2. Medical Evaluation: Your healthcare provider may request various medical evaluations, including blood tests, imaging scans (such as ultrasound or MRI), and physical examinations, to assess the severity of your condition and ensure that PRP therapy is appropriate for you.

  3. Medication Review: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are currently taking, including prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbal remedies. Some medications, such as blood thinners, may need to be temporarily discontinued before PRP treatment to reduce the risk of bleeding or other complications.

  4. Hydration: It’s important to stay well-hydrated before PRP treatment. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your procedure to ensure that your body is adequately hydrated, which can help improve the quality of your blood sample and the effectiveness of PRP therapy.

  5. Avoid NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen should be stopped before PRP therapy, because of their potential to diminish the effect of PRP Therapy. So avoid taking NSAIDs in the days leading up to your PRP treatment unless otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider.

  6. Skin Preparation: If you are receiving PRP therapy for skin rejuvenation or cosmetic purposes, your healthcare provider may recommend specific skincare preparations or procedures to optimize the results of the treatment.

  7. Follow Pre-procedure Instructions: Your healthcare provider will provide you with specific instructions to follow before your PRP treatment, such as fasting requirements, activity restrictions, and any other precautions you need to take. It’s important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure the success and safety of your PRP procedure.

The number of sessions varies based on the treatment area and individual goals. Dr. SNA will discuss a personalized plan during the consultation.

Minimal downtime is associated with PRP Therapy, allowing patients to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.

First, in order to determine if a patient is a good candidate and will benefit the most from Regenerative treatment, patient will need to schedule an appointment with our Clinic to have assessment done by our Dr, who will review his case, medical records, blood tests & radio-imaging scans and determine if the patient is a qualified candidate for regenerative therapies.

The choice of treatment is then at the discretion of the Dr and is based on the unique case. The options are: PRP injection, Stromal vascular fraction therapy and Mesenchymal cell therapy. In certain cases, it may be a combination of more than one treatment protocol.

Regenerative therapy is a same-day procedure and only takes a few hours to complete and is performed in an outpatient setting without general anesthesia and most patients don’t need post-operative pain medication. The patient will be able to go home almost immediately after the injection is done. For some patients, however, the complete protocol is a series of injections in several treatment sessions.
