Arthrosamid Injection is a non-surgical treatment for suitable patients with knee osteoarthritis. It is a non-biodegradable hydrogel made of 97.5% water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide, injected directly into the knee joint under ultrasound guidance. Unlike short-term options such as steroid or hyaluronic acid injections, Arthrosamid is designed to integrate with the synovial tissue lining the knee rather than simply coating or lubricating it temporarily.
Once injected, the hydrogel is gradually taken up into the synovial membrane through the joint's natural filtering process. Official Arthrosamid materials describe this integration as largely complete within four to six weeks. During this period, the hydrogel may help support joint cushioning, reduce stiffness, and improve comfort in suitable patients. Results are gradual rather than immediate, and individual outcomes vary depending on the severity of the condition and the patient's overall health.
At Dr SNA Clinic, every Arthrosamid Injection is performed by Mr S N Abbas, MBBS, MRCSEd, under ultrasound guidance at our clinic on Wimpole Street, Marylebone. Mr Abbas reviews each patient's imaging, medical history, and symptoms before confirming suitability. This page is informational and does not replace a personalised clinical assessment.

Book Your ConsultationKnee osteoarthritis can make everyday activities feel harder than they should. Pain, stiffness, and reduced movement can affect walking, stairs, exercise, work, and sleep. For many people, including those experiencing knee pain in ladies, these symptoms can gradually begin to affect confidence, independence, and overall quality of life.
For suitable patients, Arthrosamid Injection may help reduce knee pain, ease stiffness, and support better mobility over time. Reputable UK provider sources describe Arthrosamid Injection as a long-lasting, non-surgical option for people with knee osteoarthritis who want to stay active and improve day-to-day comfort.
If knee pain is stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, Arthrosamid Injection may offer a treatment option worth considering after proper assessment. The aim is not just symptom control, but helping suitable patients move with more comfort and confidence in daily life.
Get back to the hobbies and activities you love with reduced pain and improved mobility.
Experience years of relief from a single treatment, not just months.

Mechanism of action
Arthrosamid Injection works differently from many other knee injection treatments. According to official Arthrosamid and Contura materials, it is designed to integrate with the synovial membrane, the soft tissue lining inside the knee joint. This integration process is what distinguishes Arthrosamid from shorter-term injectable options for suitable patients with knee osteoarthritis.
01
After local anaesthetic is applied, the hydrogel is injected directly into the synovial cavity of the knee joint. This may be performed with ultrasound guidance to support accurate placement. It is typically carried out as an outpatient procedure.
02
Once inside the joint, the hydrogel disperses within the synovial fluid and is gradually taken up into the synovial membrane through the joint's natural filtering process. Official Arthrosamid materials describe this integration as largely complete within four to six weeks.
03
As the hydrogel integrates with the synovial tissue, official materials describe increased tissue elasticity and resilience. This may contribute to symptom relief and improved movement in suitable patients over time, although the exact pathways behind pain relief are still being studied.
04
Because Arthrosamid is non-biodegradable, it is not broken down in the same way as some other injected materials. Published follow-up studies have reported sustained improvements in pain and function for up to 5 years after a single injection in study participants, although individual outcomes vary.
How Arthrosamid compares to other knee injections
The mechanism described here is based on official Arthrosamid and Contura materials and published clinical study data. Individual results vary depending on the patient's condition, age, and general health. Suitability is always confirmed at consultation with Mr S N Abbas before any treatment is recommended.

Symptoms and conditions
Arthrosamid Injection is used for the symptomatic treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It is not a cure for arthritis, and it does not reverse joint damage. For suitable patients, it may help reduce pain, ease stiffness, and support better movement over time. The symptoms below are commonly associated with knee osteoarthritis and are often discussed by patients who enquire about Arthrosamid Injection at our clinic.
Pain that continues despite rest, pain relief medication, or physiotherapy. Often described as a deep aching sensation inside or around the knee that worsens with activity or after prolonged sitting.
Stiffness in the knee on waking or after periods of inactivity. NHS guidance notes that joint stiffness is a common symptom of osteoarthritis, particularly in the morning or after rest.
Difficulty bending, straightening, or fully extending the knee. Many patients describe difficulty with stairs, getting up from a chair, or walking for extended periods.
Mild to moderate swelling in or around the knee can occur with osteoarthritis and may contribute to discomfort and reduced function.
Patients who feel that their knee hurts when they bend it and straighten it may have osteoarthritis as an underlying cause. Proper clinical assessment is needed to confirm this.
The anticipation of pain can affect how people walk, exercise, and approach everyday tasks. For some patients, reduced confidence in movement is as significant as the pain itself.
Not all knee pain is caused by osteoarthritis. Mr S N Abbas will review your symptoms, medical history, examination findings, and any available imaging, or arrange investigations if clinically appropriate, before discussing whether Arthrosamid Injection is suitable for you.
Before you decide
Your consultation with Mr S N Abbas is the essential first step before any decision is made about Arthrosamid Injection. It is not a sales appointment. The purpose is to give you an honest clinical view of whether Arthrosamid Injection is appropriate for your situation.
Mr S N Abbas will take a detailed history of your knee symptoms, including how long you have had pain, what makes it better or worse, what treatments you have already tried, and how your knee is affecting your daily life and activities.
Where imaging is available, Mr S N Abbas will review it as part of the assessment. NICE guidance states that osteoarthritis is usually diagnosed clinically and does not usually require imaging to confirm the diagnosis. Imaging may still be arranged where clinically appropriate, particularly if there are atypical features or another cause of knee pain needs to be considered.
Mr S N Abbas will explain what Arthrosamid Injection involves, what the clinical evidence shows, and what outcomes are realistic for your specific situation. He will also discuss alternative treatment options where relevant. If he does not believe Arthrosamid Injection is the right option for you, he will say so clearly.
The consultation is your opportunity to ask anything you need to feel comfortable and informed. There is no obligation to proceed, and no decision needs to be made on the day.
This page is informational and does not replace a personalised clinical assessment. Suitability for Arthrosamid Injection is confirmed at consultation only.
After your treatment
Recovery after Arthrosamid Injection is generally straightforward for most patients. The procedure is carried out as an outpatient treatment, and most people are able to return home the same day. Individual experience varies, and Mr S N Abbas will give you specific aftercare advice before you leave the clinic.
Some mild discomfort, swelling, or a feeling of fullness in the treated knee is normal and is not a sign that the treatment has not worked. Avoid strenuous activity. Mr S N Abbas will give you specific guidance on activity levels before you leave.
Most patients return to light daily activities relatively quickly. Strenuous exercise and high-impact activity should be avoided until Mr S N Abbas advises otherwise. Physiotherapy may be recommended to support recovery and maximise the benefit of treatment.
If you experience significant worsening of pain, signs of infection such as increasing redness, warmth or fever, or any concern that feels out of the ordinary, contact the clinic directly. Do not wait for your follow-up appointment if you are concerned.
Based on official Arthrosamid materials and published clinical study data. Individual outcomes vary considerably.
Week 1 to 2
The knee is settling after the injection. Some discomfort or swelling is normal. Most patients notice no significant change in symptoms at this stage.
Week 4
The hydrogel integration process is progressing. Some patients begin to notice early changes in comfort or stiffness around this point, though this varies considerably between individuals.
Weeks 8 to 12
Official Arthrosamid materials describe the integration process as largely complete within four to six weeks. Many patients report the most noticeable improvements in pain, stiffness, and mobility during this period. The follow-up review with Mr S N Abbas is typically scheduled around this time.
12 months and beyond
Published follow-up studies have reported sustained improvements in pain and function for up to five years after a single injection in study participants. Individual outcomes vary. An annual review may be recommended to assess ongoing response to treatment.
Results described here are based on official Arthrosamid materials and published clinical study data. Individual outcomes vary. This information does not replace the personalised aftercare guidance provided by Mr S N Abbas at your appointment.
Arthrosamid Injection is a non-biodegradable hydrogel made of 97.5% water and 2.5% polyacrylamide. It is designed for the symptomatic treatment of knee osteoarthritis and works differently from short-term injectable options because it is intended to become integrated within the synovial tissue of the knee.
The science behind Arthrosamid Injection focuses on the synovial membrane, which is the soft tissue lining inside the knee joint. After injection, the hydrogel is taken up into this tissue over time, where it may help create a cushioning effect, support joint elasticity, and improve comfort in suitable patients. Official Arthrosamid and UK provider sources describe this as a gradual physical and biological process rather than an instant effect.
This is why Arthrosamid Injection is often discussed as a longer-lasting option for knee osteoarthritis. Clinical and provider information reports that, in suitable patients, it may help reduce pain, ease stiffness, and improve mobility after a single injection, with benefits that can be maintained over time.
Permanently combines with synovial membrane through natural filtering process
Reduces cytokine storm of inflammatory cells in synovial lining
2 clinical studies showing sustained relief for up to 5 years from single injection

EXPERT PERSPECTIVE
Understanding Arthrosamid Injection’s unique mechanism of action
For many patients, living with knee osteoarthritis means managing ongoing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility with temporary measures that do not always provide lasting relief. This is why Arthrosamid Injection has become an important non-surgical option for suitable patients looking for longer-term support. If knee pain is affecting your walking, daily routine, or confidence in movement, Arthrosamid Injection may offer a different approach to treatment.
What makes Arthrosamid Injection different is the way it works inside the joint. Rather than acting as a short-term injectable, Arthrosamid Injection is a non-biodegradable hydrogel designed to integrate with the synovial membrane in the knee. Over time, this may help support the joint environment, reduce stiffness, and improve comfort and function in suitable patients. This is one reason why Arthrosamid Injection is increasingly discussed as a longer-lasting option for knee osteoarthritis management.
For patients comparing treatment choices, Arthrosamid Injection may be appealing because it is a single-injection, non-surgical treatment that fits between repeated short-term injections and more invasive procedures. Patients researching Arthrosamid Injection Cost or Arthrosamid Injection Cost UK are often looking not only at price, but also at durability, convenience, and whether the treatment may help them stay active for longer. For suitable patients, Arthrosamid Injection may support longer-lasting symptom relief and help improve day-to-day mobility.

Honest comparison
Patients researching knee osteoarthritis treatment often consider several injection options before making a decision. The comparison below is based on published clinical guidance including NICE, official Arthrosamid and Contura materials, and reputable UK provider sources. It is intended to help you understand the differences, not to suggest that one treatment is always superior to another. The right option depends on your specific diagnosis, medical history, and clinical assessment with Mr S N Abbas.

Arthrosamid Injection is generally considered a low-risk, minimally invasive procedure when carried out by an appropriately trained clinician in a suitable clinical setting. As with any injectable treatment, there are potential side effects and risks that patients should understand before making a decision. All risks and contraindications are discussed with Mr S N Abbas at consultation before any treatment is agreed.
Mild to moderate pain or discomfort in the knee in the days following the procedure. Common and expected. Typically resolves within a few days.
Mild swelling or a feeling of fullness in the knee is commonly reported. Generally settles without treatment. Contact the clinic if swelling is significant or worsening.
Some patients notice temporary increased stiffness in the treated knee in the days following the procedure. Typically improves as the knee settles.
Minor bruising around the injection site may occur and is not a cause for concern in most cases.
Infection is a rare but serious risk associated with any invasive joint procedure. Because of this risk, Arthrosamid is administered under sterile conditions and official product instructions state that prophylactic antibiotics should be given before injection. If you experience increasing redness, warmth, fever, or worsening pain after the procedure, seek medical attention promptly and contact the clinic directly.
Patients with a known hypersensitivity to polyacrylamide or any component of the treatment should not receive Arthrosamid. Any relevant allergies, previous reactions to injected treatments, antibiotics, or local anaesthetic should be discussed at consultation before the procedure is agreed.
Not all patients respond to Arthrosamid Injection. Outcomes vary between individuals and a meaningful improvement is not guaranteed. Mr S N Abbas will give you a realistic assessment of the likelihood of benefit based on your specific situation.
Following consultation and clinical review, Mr S N Abbas may advise that Arthrosamid Injection is not the most appropriate option for your knee. Alternative treatment options will be discussed openly.

A published randomised controlled trial compared Arthrosamid Injection with hyaluronic acid in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The study found Arthrosamid was non-inferior to hyaluronic acid over 12 months after a single injection, with clinically meaningful improvements in pain and function reported in the Arthrosamid group. Individual outcomes varied between participants.
A 2025 publication reporting five-year follow-up data from a prospective open-label study found sustained improvements in WOMAC pain, stiffness, function, and patient global assessment through to five years in study participants. Individual outcomes varied and further research is ongoing.
The published clinical data reports a generally favourable safety profile in study participants. The most commonly reported adverse events were procedure-related, such as temporary pain or swelling. In the five-year extension study, no serious events were attributed to the investigational device, and no new adverse device effects were reported.
The evidence base for Arthrosamid Injection is growing but remains relatively limited compared to more established treatments. Published studies involve selected patient populations and controlled settings. Results in a study population may not reflect outcomes for every individual patient in routine clinical practice. Suitability is always assessed individually by Mr S N Abbas.
The evidence summaries above are based on official Arthrosamid and Contura materials and published peer-reviewed data available at the time of writing. Individual results vary. This information does not replace a personalised clinical assessment with Mr S N Abbas.
